About
Our Mission
We aim to encourage an intellectual approach to the overarching field of finance by teaching our members analytical skills and giving them a publishing platform. Our first step towards this mission is conducting equity research, then providing an understanding of additional asset classes and investing philosophies. Promontory Research Analysts are intellectually curious to learn more, and enable the democratization of financial knowledge to the broad student body through their published work.
We deliver our mission through a comprehensive quarter-long training program, after which New Recruits move on to be Research Analysts, publishing quarterly equity research and adding value to the Promontory team through participation in events and further training. The education module emphasizes a hands-on learning experience and frequent one-on-one consultation sessions with senior members. General meetings revolve around discussions and group projects.
Our culture emphasizes unbiased analysis in a casual and relaxing atmosphere. You can find our hardworking RAs battling the Chicago cold and desperately trying to light the fire for our quarterly grill, or fervently defending their investment theses in front of the entire Promontory team.
Club Membership
New Recruits (NRs):
All Promontory members begin as NRs in the 6-week Basic Financial Training (BFT) program, which walks them through their first equity research report.
Research Analysts (RAs):
RAs work in industry pods of 3-4 members every quarter to produce a full-length equity research report on a public company. At the end of the quarter, the Research Committee selects the best reports for our quarterly print edition distributed on campus.
The Board
The Board's mandate is to guide Promontory toward producing well-researched reports, educating new members, and building a strong internal community.
The President manages the smooth execution of all club programs and activities. They also lead the Head of Engagement and Head of Operations in organizing quarterly recruitment, planning internal and external events, and handling partnerships.
The Head of Research leads the Research Committee in ensuring the quality of all reports as they evolve throughout the academic quarter.
The Head of Education leads the Teaching Committee in planning and executing instructional curricula for NRs undergoing BFT.
Our Research
Promontory Investment Research is a student-run Registered Student Organization (RSO) at the University of Chicago. Our reports are written and published by students who have no professional experience in the industry. Therefore, we are unable to ensure that the securities referred to in our reports are suitable for any particular investor. The investments and services referred to in our reports may not be suitable for you and it is recommended that you consult an independent investment advisor if you are in doubt about such investments or investment services. Nothing we publish constitutes investment, legal, accounting or tax advice, or a representation that any investment or strategy is suitable or appropriate to your individual circumstances, or otherwise constitutes a personal recommendation to you. Information and opinions presented in our reports have been obtained or derived from sources believed by Promontory to be reliable, but we can make no representation as to their accuracy or completeness.
Our goal with the publication is to first offer our Research Analysts hands-on training on conducting equity research by providing them a platform to publish their work, and second, to offer students an opportunity to leverage our publicly available resources to gain additional knowledge of investment products and industry. We accept no liability for loss arising from the use of the material presented in our reports, and these should not be relied upon in substitution for the exercise of independent judgment.
